IN THE HEIGHTS performs September 14 – 29, 2013, with a paid preview on September 13, 2013. Rehearsals are currently scheduled to begin the week of July 29, 2013.
Auditions are scheduled for Saturday, June 1, 2013 from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm
Callbacks scheduled for Wednesday, June 12, 2013 from 6 pm – 11:00 pm.
Auditions and callbacks will be at the Lucie Stern Theater, 1305 Middlefield Road in Palo Alto.
All roles are currently open. Stipend available. Palo Alto Players is considering one AEA guest artist contract for this production.
Please prepare a one-minute selection of a contemporary Broadway musical that shows off your vocal and acting range. An accompanist will be provided, please bring sheet music in your key, no tapes or recordings please. All those auditioning should be prepared to move.
About the show: In the shadow of the George Washington Bridge, the corner bodega in the vibrant Manhattan neighborhood of Washington Heights can serve up a café con leche as light and sweet as the breezes carrying the joyous rhythms of its music. Salsa. Merengue. Hip-hop. Pop. A music to three generations, each pulsating with change, full of hope and dreams for success in this Dominican-flavored slice of America. This unstoppable four-time Tony Award winner will dance into your heart with its uplifting celebration of life and the true meaning of values, tradition…and home.
We are looking for the following characters to bring this exciting show to life:
USNAVI: Late 20s-early 30s; the owner of a bodega in Washington Heights; charismatic leading man with tremendous heart. Baritone, very strong and clear rapping/narrative skills.
NINA ROSARIO: Early 20s; daughter of Kevin and Camila; the first to go to college (Stanford University); vulnerable, bookworm, intelligent; strong belt.
BENNY: late 20s, African-American, he falls in love with Nina; hardworking, good guy; can be a character actor; Bari-tenor; moves well.
VANESSA: Late 20s; Usnavi’s love interest; beautiful, strong high belt; great dancer.
SONNY: Early 20s; Usnavi’s sassy, lazy, yet ambitious younger cousin who works in the bodega; a strong mover.
ABUELA CLAUDIA: 40+; raised Usnavi and Sonny; the elder and matriarch of the barrio who knows everybody and is like a grandmother to all; Alto belt.
DANIELA: Late 20s-early 30s; the outrageous owner of the salon, tough on the surface, compassionate underneath; good belt; good dance.
CARLA: 20s; works at Daniela’s salon along with Vanessa; innocent; good comedienne; strong dance.
KEVIN ROSARIO: 40s; Nina’s father; overprotective of Nina; owns Rosario’s Car Service; hard exterior; baritone.
CAMILA ROSARIO: 40s; Nina’s mother, who wants what is best for Nina; no-nonsense; strong-willed; Mezzo range.
PIRAGUA GUY: Late 20s-early 30s; local piragua vendor; tenor.
GRAFFITI PETE: Early 20s; graffiti artist and friend of Sonny; perceived by Usnavi as a trouble-making vandal, artist; sings; very strong dancer; acrobatics a plus.
ENSEMBLE: Residents of Washington Heights, men and women who sing and dance well.
